The Exercise Pill

August 1st, 2008

Quoted from http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/25949447/:

Exercise in a pill? Drugs show promise in mice – Diet and nutrition- msnbc.com

Here’s a couch potato’s dream: What if a drug could help you gain some of the benefits of exercise without working up a sweat?

Scientists reported Thursday that there is such a drug — if you happen to be a mouse.

Sedentary mice that took the drug for four weeks burned more calories and had less fat than untreated mice. And when tested on a treadmill, they could run about 44 percent farther and 23 percent longer than untreated mice.

This is one of those topics where I have to wave my arms around wildly and say “Whoa, whoa, whoa!” to the world. Drug companies are always trying to PILLify the solutions to our problems, and most of us gladly open our palms and wash it down with an Evian. Does the description of the effects this experimental drug (AICAR) sound familiar to anyone? What are some other things that help you keep your weight down and your energy up. Caffeine? Nicotine? Speed perhaps? Just because we can squeeze something down into a pill doesn’t mean we should take it. I can imagine the year 2090. We will have all our meals consolidated into one daily pill. Exercise in a pill. Sleep in a pill. Soul mate in a pill? I shudder at the thought. Can we please keep exercise alive? Stay healthy, stay natural. Shortcuts in life just cut life short.

Jessica Hardy Should Know Better!

July 27th, 2008

Jessica Hardy, a top American swimmer, qualifed for the 2008 Olympic Games in several events at the Olympic Trials. However, she tested positive for
clenbuterol
(a banned substance) on July 4th and has been suspended, and won’t be allowed to compete in Beijing. This is causing a super stir in the swimming world because although she claims to be innocent, if her suspension holds up it is too late to add her replacement to the U.S. Olympic Team roster.
Much to the extreme disappointment of Tara Kirk, who is next in line to go.

Here’s my take: JESSICA HARDY IS GUILTY! Competing at a world class level in any olympic sport means that you will be under the watchful eye of various governing bodies. As a former collegiate track athlete I know how often and how good those drug tests are. They catch most everything. She claims she didn’t do anything wrong. So why did you test positive then Hardy? If you try to blame it on something in a medication (pleading ignorance) that’s equal to a bunch of bull. All top athletes know what medicines not to take, and to avoid OD’ing on poppyseed bagels if there is the slightest chance you will take a drug test anytime soon. If you test positive, especially if it’s multiple positives, with those sophisticated tests, you are a cheater. And I’m not down with cheaters. Too bad some people like to mess it up for everybody else. That goes for you too Marion Jones.
